This project provides a new generation of green, sustainable and profitable solutions for the growing protein deficiency challenge among humans and animals. The larvae require 40 times less feed input to produce the same amount of protein as cattle, five times less than sheep, four times less than pig and poultry. In addition to the high protein conversion rate from organic wastes, BSF larvae are capable of converting a wide variety of organic waste streams into animal proteins or fertilizers. This could potentially significantly reduce landfill waste volume or be a much-needed alternative to generate cost savings in treating wastewater sludge via a thermal drying process.
